The first line shows the next place on the route with a post
office, the middle line (if any) shows the next most important place on
the route, and the last line shows the "control city". The control
city is determined by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation
Officials for Interstate routes. On other routes, the control city is
the county seat or most important place on the route. |

for Via County Road signs? |

If the city is not on a highway route, the city must appear
on the official State Transportation Map or be a traffic generator with
local or area significance. If the city is on a highway route, the county
road must be significantly shorter than the highway route. The Via County
Road signs would be installed on the highway at the intersection with
the closest and most direct route to the city. Approval for the signing
must be obtained from the County. |

for obtaining signing for a museum or other attraction of historical significance?

The Kansas State Historical Society must agree that the attraction
has historical significance. If they do, contact the Bureau of Traffic
Engineering and signs with a brown background will be installed on the
highway at the intersection with the closest and most direct route to
the attraction. These signs are installed at no cost to the attraction.
Signs located within a city should be requested through the City. |

The Travel and Tourism Division of the Kansas Department of
Commerce and Housing must agree that the attraction is a valid tourist
attraction. If they do, contact the Bureau of Traffic Engineering and
signs with a brown background will be installed on the highway at the
intersection with the closest and most direct route to the attraction.
These signs are installed at no cost to the attraction. Signs located
within a city should be requested through the City. |

if signing is allowed? |

The American Association of State Highway and Transportation
Officials has developed a list of traffic generators for which signing
is not recommended. Kansas follows those guidelines. The list includes
public services such as shopping centers, libraries, courthouses, and
industrial parks; private campgrounds for churches and scouts; and recreational
facilities such as golf courses and country clubs. |
